The TOEFL® (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test  measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings. An internationally accepted standard of academic English proficiency, it is a required certification by more than 5000 colleges and universities worldwide, including many top Middle Eastern universities.

As English language teachers, you are critical resources for your institutions and  your knowledge can help your institutions use the TOEFL® test effectively to select students for admissions and place them in appropriate courses depending on their proficiency in English.

You can also choose to use other ETS products.

The TOEFL® ITP (Institutional Testing Programme), an assessment tool derived from the paper-based TOEFL® test, provides institutions with a reliable and valid measure of students’ skills in listening, reading and grammar in English. It is a low-tech and cost-effective method of testing groups of students of any size within classrooms – it is, hence, flexible and facilitates instructor ease of use. TOEFL® ITP consists of previously administered TOEFL® test forms, which your institution can order from ETS Middle East. These can then be administered at any time on your facilities, and then returned to ETS Middle East for scoring.

It is ideal to include the TOEFL® ITP in your programme because:

  • It is based on TOEFL® test, the most reliable academic English language assessment
  • It is convenient – you can administer it anytime, on your own facilities
  • It is an accurate predictor of performance on the secure and more formal TOEFL® test
  • It can be used to assess the progress of students, since it can be administered easily any number of times
  • It is a motivational tool for students wishing to improve their level of English

You can use the TOEFL® ITP for numerous internal decisions:

    • To place individuals in appropriate English courses
    • To assess the progress of students, by testing language proficiency at the beginning and end of the course
    • To evaluate programme effectiveness
    • As exit criteria for a programme
    • In awarding academic credits
    • To fulfil a language requirement
    • As a mock exam to indicate how students could expect to perform on the more formal TOEFL® test
